Reading Eggs - review

Reading Eggs is an interactive website for emerging readers. Even though we are well past the "learn to read" stage of learning, I was asked to review it for the TOS Homeschool Crew.

My youngest daughter is older than the recommended age range, but she is not yet a strong reader, so I was able to use the Reading Eggspress portion of the website (which is really targeted at students in the 7-13 age range). I thought she might find it too babyish, but she seems to enjoy it. She can select a book from the "library," read it right there on the screen, and answer a few comprehension questions. Then she is awarded points which she can use to dress up or accessorize her avatar character. She enjoys that aspect of it, so that motivates her to read more to get more points. There are other activities as well, such as spelling and grammar exercises.

We did not look into the beginning reader section of the website, as it is geared for much younger children (ages 3-7). You can read other reviews on the Crew of families who did. Reading Eggs offers a 14-day free trial. Subscriptions are available in the following options: 12 months for $75, 6 months for $49.95, monthly for $9.95.
